Christmas Skates
I wanted skates for Christmas.
Figure skates.
He wouldn’t hear of it.
I got hockey skates.
I loved skating,
the warming shed,
and the laughter-
even the sounds of the ice.
So I went.
But still today
watching figure skating on television,
I always remember
how I hated those damn black and brown hockey skates.
