From a Distance

From a Distance

Ghetto girl with dirty feet,

Do those stars in your eyes

belie dreams that your

grandmother’s mother had ?

Dreams that could allow me

tenuous grasp on  meaning to eternity?

When you dream beyond your hovel,

that shabby shack blanketed under gritty skies

twined blind with tangled urban lines,

lines that carry messages

everywhere

but never to you,

do you learn or yearn  love

beyond reality?

Is there something

that compels you

to wake-up and rat-scurry through

another, another, another day ?

I wonder.

But I’m afraid to get close enough to

 find out.
